Rahul Gandhi arrives in Srinagar for first time after repeal of Article 370, meets Gupkar leaders

Asif Suhaf, Jammu and Kashmir: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi arrived in Srinagar on Monday on a two-day visit. Rahul Gandhi will meet party leaders on Tuesday morning and inaugurate the newly constructed party headquarters on MA Road.

In addition, J&K Congress President Golam Ahmed Mir will host a dinner for Rahul Gandhi and senior Congress leaders in the evening.

Leaders of the People’s Alliance, including National Conference President Farooq Abdullah, People’s Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti and Communist Party of India General Secretary Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, are expected to attend the meeting. During his stay in Kashmir, Gandhi will visit Hazratbal Dargah and Shankaracharya Temple.

This is Rahul Gandhi’s first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since the repeal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. However, earlier in August 2019, two weeks after the cancellation of 370, Rahul Gandhi arrived in Srinagar with an opposition delegation to monitor the situation, but at that time the administration deported all the opposition leaders from the airport.

On August 5, 2019, the Central Government revoked Articles 370 and 35A and revoked the special status accorded to Jammu and Kashmir. Since then, many political parties have been demanding a full-fledged state of Jammu and Kashmir. On July 28, State Minister for Home Affairs Nityananda Rai told the Rajya Sabha that once the situation returned to normal, Jammu and Kashmir would get full statehood.
