HOUSTON ( Associated Press) — Cal Raleigh and Ty France both made early home runs and the Seattle Mariners beat the Astros 6-3 on Wednesday night to finally win a series in Houston.
The Mariners took on AL West rival Astros two of three to win their fourth consecutive series and their first in Houston since September 2018.
Seattle has struggled in recent years at Minute Maid Park. The Mariners won more games in this set than Houston in the 2019 and 2020 seasons, when they were down 1-16.
The Mariners trailed with two in the fourth and one out in the fourth when Raleigh homed for the second time in the series, a shot from Jose Urquidi (5-3) to the right-centre to tie for 3.
France joined with two outsiders in the innings for a single drive that propelled Seattle.
Logan Gilbert (6-2) conceded seven hits and three runs in six innings to win his second straight decision. He conceded three runs before settling down to pitch three scoreless frames. Diego Castillo defended his fourth in the ninth.
Urquidy scored seven hits and five runs – four earned – in 4 1/3 innings while going career-high four.
Yordan Alvarez scored three hits and two runs for the Astros, who also dropped a series last week to the Mariners in Seattle.
The Mariners got a double from JP Crawford to start fifth and moved to third after a single by Eugenio Suarez and an error by shortstop Aldamis Diaz. A sacrificial fly chases Urquidi by Adam Frazier.
Seattle rookie Julio Rodriguez suffered a left arm injury in consecutive at-bats in the sixth and eighth innings. He took first base both times without incident, in contrast to incidents in Monday night’s game when benches were cleared and France received multiple ejections after being dropped by Hector Neris.
Jesse Winker took the lead in the eighth with a run-scoring single.
Alvarez put up Houston with the first RBI single with two outs.
Urquidy went winker with one in second and he moved to second on a pitch wild by Urquidy with two outs. Rodriguez went on a single by Crawford before tying Seattle to 1.
Jose Altuve opened second with a double on a line drive to Houston in left field. Alex Bregman hits a single with a single and Altuve is dismissed to the plate.
Alvarez drove in a double Bregman and placed the Astros in the top 2-1. Kyle Tucker then scored another home run.
Mariners: Kyle Lewis, who has been out since sustaining an injury on May 28, is still experiencing symptoms and has yet to resume baseball activities. … RF Mitch Hanniger (sprained right ankle) just isn’t walking but is hitting the cage. There is no timetable for his return.
Mariners: Seattle has a Thursday before hosting the Boston Red Sox on Friday night in the opener of the 11-game homestand.
Astros: Houston is also closed on Thursday night ahead of the start of a three-match Interleague series with Miami.
