Rams’ Aaron Donald Can’t Stop Smiling With Von Miller Added

The Rams had traded for outside midfielder Von Miller three days earlier, but star-back Aaron Donald was apparently still feeling the initial effects on Thursday.

“I haven’t stopped smiling yet,” he said, smiling broadly and chuckling after training.

Donald is a three-time NFL Defender of the Year. The six-time all-pro has done well in his seven-plus seasons in the NFL, amassing 90 and a half sacks, including five this season.

But no Rams player can benefit more from the arrival of Miller, an eight-time Pro Bowl player with 110 1/2 sacks.

As with Donald, Miller has been subject to double and triple blocking from opponents since the Denver Broncos selected him as their second pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

“It will be difficult for teams to focus on one person because you have so many good players.”

Now that Donald, Miller, and winger Leonard Floyd are threatening quarterbacks, assigning multiple blockers to more than one will create opportunities for others.

“I’ve been getting triple teams for the past 10 years,” Miller said. “These are six people. And we still have Leonard Floyd and all the other guys.

“So this is going to be fun.”

Donald agreed.

“It will be difficult for teams to focus on one person because you have so many good players,” he said. “This should be fun.”

And for the Rams attack.

“First, it makes me want to get off the bench and watch the defense a little more,” said receiver Cooper Kupp. “As an offensive player, it’s incredible when those players on the other side of the ball come out.

Being acquired by the Rams made outside midfielder von Miller smile.

Miller’s status for Sunday night’s game against the Tennessee Titans at SoFi Stadium will be determined in the next few days. Miller is recovering from an ankle injury and was marked as restricted in training in Thursday’s injury report. But during the part of the practice that was open to reporters, Miller went through all the training, seemingly without failure.

Rams Defense Coordinator Raheem Morris coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2011 when Miller entered the NFL Draft after four seasons with Texas A&M.

Morris said the Buccaneers, with their 20th pick, played a 4-3 defense, so some Buccaneers executives did not see von Miller as ideal for this setup.

“I said, ‘Change the circuit,’” Morris said, laughing. “And I meant it. I have different views on what he can do for us. “

Miller “brings the plays to life,” Morris said.

“He’s one of those great players in this league who can be moved anywhere,” Morris said. “You can do whatever you want with it.”

According to Morris, Miller is in “adjusting” mode to the Rams and will gradually feel comfortable defending the Rams base.

“And then you go play with these toys,” Morris said. “You don’t leave them in the packaging they were in.”

Donald looked like he couldn’t wait.

“It looks very good on paper,” he said, “but we still need to go out and make it possible.”

Quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) did not train for the second day in a row. Receiver Robert Woods (ft) was also eliminated for the second day in a row. Both are expected to play on Sunday. Corner-back Jalen Ramsey (knee), striker Andrew Whitworth (knee) and full-back Sebastian Joseph-Day were all capped, according to the injury report. After a rest break on Wednesday, Kupp was a full-fledged participant in the training. Kupp has been named NFC Attacker of the Month for the second time. … Rookie quarterback Bobby Brown III trained after Wednesday’s absence for personal reasons.
