Boston – Justin Meadows tied the game with a ground homer in the ninth inning, Nelson Cruz in the tenth and Tampa Bay Rays Monday 11-10 . rallied six touchdowns to defeat the Boston Red Sox.
The Rays, the leaders of the AL East Division, took advantage of four opposing errors, the worst when center fielder Alex Verdugo loaded Cruz fly clearly because of the sun and two outs in the fourth.
The ball bounced off Verdugo’s glove and Cruz ended up flipping all the pads of the play and scoring when second baseman Taylor Motter hit a wild pitch that allowed Tampa Bay to close 7-5 against starter Chris Sells. Gave permission.
Cruz also hit a home run and a pair of RBI singles for the Rays cause, which extended his lead in the LA East Division to eight and a half games over New York. The Red Sox missed an opportunity to pass to the Yankees for the top LA wild-card spot.
When the Red Sox took a 9-8 lead, Meadows opened ninth and hit a full-count fastball to Garrett Whitlock (7-3). The ball bounced off the Fenway Park center-field wall, without Verdugo being able to catch it jumping. Boston misses the relay and Meadows is out at the plate.
Boston, trailing 11-9 in the 10th inning, narrowed the gap to one when Cuban Jose Iglesias singled out Colin McHai (6-1). With first and middle one up against and runner-up, JD Martinez fires an unquestionable right.
Cuba’s Randy Arozerena scored 6-2, two runs, one run for the Rez. Dominican wanderer Franco scored 6-4, three runs; Nelson Cruz 6-3, scored three runs, three RBIs and Francisco Mejia 3-0.
For the Red Sox, Cuban Jose Iglesias 1-1, an RBI. Rafael Devers 4-2, one run scored, one run scored. Puerto Rican Christian Vazquez 5-1, one score, one RBI. Panamanian Jonathan Araz 5-1, two runs, an RBI.
