Red Sox Notebook: Jaren Duran to move to second place as Alex Cora major lineup shakeup

alex kora Have been reluctant to reshuffle their lineup throughout the season, but with their offense scrambled and in need of a spark, the Red Sox manager shook up the order in a major way on Monday.

kike hernandezhu He finished in the leadoff spot for the series opener against the Blue Jays at Buffalo, but had a lot of change behind him. Jaren Duran moved to second place in the order, and the Red Sox went with 3-4-5 hitters xander bogarts third, Raphael Devers fourth and JD Martinez Fifth. alex verdugo, who has been struggling as of late, moved from the No. 2 hole to sixth.

“I’m trying to maximize JD,” Cora said. “Bring some traffic in front of him. There was an at-bat (Sunday) that caught my attention with Rafi. He had traffic and they didn’t attack him.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a while. How can we rearrange JD, Xander and Raffy so we can maximize them? Since Oakland, like I said (Sunday) we haven’t been good aggressively . So why not? It also relieves Duggee, although he is hitting the back of the Jedi, but maybe a different batting.”

Cora isn’t worried about her crime. They think the at-bats are still quality. But after seeing what happened this weekend in New York, where the Red Sox scored just six runs in 24 innings, he wanted to give it a try.

“Today it just felt like, let’s try it and see what happens,” Cora said. “Maybe Zareen goes ahead and we can run and we can put pressure on him. Dougie comes in with a loaded base and no outsiders, he can hit a grand slam. you never know. It’s still the same group of people. We’ll tweak it for the time being and see where it takes us.”

Duran was impressive over the weekend in his debut, and the quality of his bat convinced Cora that he was ready to take second down the order.

“It sounds like he belongs,” Cora said. “Yeah, he swings and misses, he gets out, but they were batting competitive. You can see the energy, you can see the confidence, and obviously you see the athlete.

“Even the response I got (Aaron Boone) and here it Phil Nevina and Carlos Mendoza, his bench coach, he’s like, ‘It’s the kid.’ So, now we just have to keep finding good matchups for him, keep gaining confidence, and that’s going to be a big part of what we’re trying to achieve.

Verdugo may be the biggest beneficiary of the shakeup. The outfielder has seen a steady decline in his offensive output since May 23, as he was batting. 245 from 43 matches entered on Monday.

“Swing and miss lately, that’s not that,” said Cora. “It’s a guy, he makes contact, he turns to the other side and it hasn’t happened to him consistently, but he’s working. He’s working. I think it’s just a matter of time.” When you’re laying down on the fastball and out front on off speed pitches, it’s all about timing. But even with Doogie, is it that easy with them, their attitude. Not too many adjustments, just It’s just a matter of getting that time back and going back to reckoning.”
