Red Sox sign Justin Turner for one season

BOSTON ( Associated Press) — The Red Sox signed infielder Justin Turner for one season Friday to make up for the departure of star free agent Xander Bogaerts.

Venezuelan lefty Darvinzon Hernandez was sent to the minor leagues to make room for Turner on the 40-man roster.

The arrival of Turner, 38, after an 11-year, $331 million deal Boston awarded Rafael Devers to stay with the Red Sox, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Turner became a free agent after the Dodgers declined their $16 million option to keep him with the club.

Turner was named Most Valuable Player in the 2017 NLCS, was an All-Star in 2017 and 2021, and helped the Dodgers win the World Series in 2020 in a pandemic-shortened season.

He hit .278 with 13 home runs and 81 RBI in 128 games after an early season slump in ERA.

After the All-Star break, he had a .340 ERA and went 2-for-13 in the NLDS, which saw the Dodgers eliminated.

During his nine seasons in Los Angeles, he remained a fan favorite and active in the community. In November, he received the Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes baseball players for their philanthropic efforts.

Last month, Bogarts signed an 11-year, $280 million contract with San Diego.
