Redefining Waste: The City and County of Yahara Hills for a Future Landfill with a Focus on Reuse

This nation’s first system captures enough gas every day to heat about 6,500 typical Wisconsin homes, and generates the district about $ 2.5 million in annual revenue.

A garbage dump about seven stories tall is awaiting compaction at the Dane County landfill, which is approaching full capacity. The district is developing a plan for the construction of a new facility that will focus on waste management as a resource.

As with all city golf courses, the number of games has declined steadily over the past 40 years, although the sport has re-emerged in popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic.

But 2020 marks the first year in two decades that 53-year-old Yahara Hills has seen enough games to break even, said park manager Eric Knepp.

Report: Madison keeps getting better at rework, but room for improvement

Under the new contract, each percentage of garbage in trash cans will cost the city an additional $ 1 per ton.

It’s unclear how long this hit might last, but Knepp said it’s entirely possible that without improvements to the course for the city’s golf program, another year could come, like 2018, when it lost nearly $ 1 million.

“Climate change and the lack of infrastructure to handle storm water means that Yahara is just waiting for extreme weather conditions that will put him in a worse position than he has seen,” he said. “Left without reinvestment, Yahara is able to create a resource drain that could again dangerously bring us closer to these results in the future.”

Even if the sale is approved, the current 36 holes at Yahara Hills will remain open for the next three years with “minimal disruption” until at least 2028.

At this point, the course could be reconfigured or continue with the remaining 18 holes until 2045 or possibly later, said Street Superintendent Charlie Romains, who previously oversaw the city’s golf operations.
