Local adipose is the specific area of the body where adipose tissue is stored. There are many methods and treatments that promise to shrink these areas, from exercise to massage, but do they really work? Dr. Carlos Jaramillo answers this question in this episode Education with Science.
Exercise and Local Fat Loss
One of the promising ways to reduce areas of localized fat is exercises that focus on those specific areas, for example, crunches and twists to reduce belly fat. However, a study by the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation concluded that activity of a specific muscle does not necessarily lead to fat loss from that area. In other words, doing ten sit-ups a day doesn’t mean you’ll lose belly fat.
It should be noted that this does not mean that exercise is not useful when it comes to reducing body fat in general. In physical activity, the body uses energy stores to supply caloric expenditure, which is why it is recommended to exercise on an empty stomach if you want to burn fat more efficiently.
This is because exercising burns energy, and doing so after sleep forces the body to draw on energy stores stored in the tissues. On the other hand, doing so after eating expends newly acquired energy and consequently retains energy stores (fat).
