Regal Cinemas to close 39 movie theaters across the United States

NEW YORK (CNN) — Regal Cinemas will close 39 more movie theaters across the United States.

The decision comes four months after its parent company Cineworld filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after the pandemic ravaged the industry and public screenings.

In a filing this week, Cineworld said it plans to decline leases for all 39 theaters effective February 15, which would save the company $22 million annually.

Cineworld is working with owners to keep its other theaters open. After these closures and the closure of 12 locations in the previous round of closures in September 2022, there are about 500 left.

“The Debtors expect that these negotiations will result in lease concessions and modifications that will eliminate the requirement of denial and allow additional movie sites to remain open,” Cineworld said in this week’s filing.

When Cineworld announced its decision to file for bankruptcy last year, the company said it wanted to get rid of debt. He expects that the filing for bankruptcy will “strengthen its balance sheet and provide it with the financial strength and flexibility to accelerate and capitalize on Cineworld’s strategy in the film industry.”

Regal Cinemas is the second largest movie theater chain in the United States after AMC Theaters, with 950 locations according to its website.
