Reggie Jackson plays Paul George and the Clippers

Another evening, when the Clippers weren’t attacking, their most important basket came 36 seconds before the game.

Paul George scored 27 of 32 points after the break, but in the final seconds of Monday failed to find a single crack in Oklahoma City’s defenses. A pass on the left found defender Reggie Jackson well past the three-point arc. He lifted a running, one-handed float that touched the front of the rim, then the back, and then flopped to a three-point lead that the Clippers did not lose in a much-needed 99-94 win.

But what happened next became one of the most important moments of the Clippers season.

Standing in the middle of the court, George spread his arms and hugged his closest friend.

“I needed that hug,” Jackson told The Times. “As soon as he hugged me, he said, ‘Appreciate this.’ He’s like, “You will be fine. Are you okay. You made one. He was so happy for me and the man, I literally told him: “I’m just happy that I didn’t let you down.” I was happy to have one for you. “

The moment has been piling up not 48 minutes, but four months since Jackson’s rise to solid, second-best offense after Kawhi Leonard’s knee injury at the end of the season sparked the deepest playoff streak in team history. Jackson scored double-digit numbers in 16 of 19 games. He wore glasses during games, talked about prospects, and became an avatar for the cheery recovery of the squad from the bitter disappointment of 2020.

When Jackson re-signed the $ 22 million two-year deal in August, he knew Leonard would be suspended for several months and believed his playoffs would continue to grow.

Instead, he made only 31% of his shots and only 29% of his 3s during the 1-4 start. George, whose friendship with Jackson dates back ten years, felt weighty.

“He put a lot of pressure on himself,” said George. “And when you don’t shoot and the game doesn’t go the way you want it to, it only makes it harder.”

“I needed this hug.”

Jackson’s best attribute in the NBA may be his Teflon nature, his ability not to let good wins or bad nights stay with him for long. This attitude arises from the realization that he is “lucky to do what I love to do,” and that he is still doing it after he contemplated retirement in 2020.

However, he could not shake off his strange beginning.

“I like to think that I remain confident, I remain very optimistic, I try to avoid dark days and all that, and I try to give out that I’m okay,” Jackson said. “But sometimes, damn it, we all kind of go through it.”

This was compounded by George’s hot start and Jackson’s frustration at not complementing his friend the way he proved he could last summer.

“I like to feel like I can handle the extra pressure, to feel like I can play well for my teammates. You don’t have to do it and throw the ball right now, don’t help with it, play well right now, yes, it sucks. It’s difficult, ”he said. “I try not to show it. I try not to highlight it. I try to stay positive and optimistic.

“I would like to be optimistic and cheerful, to see the best in everything, but yes, at times I still have emotions. I can still feel it. When I fail to succeed, I still go home, and it puts a little pressure on me. ”

The Clippers came out on Monday, throwing 31% from depth, nine percentage points lower than last season, despite bringing back many of the same shooters and doing what coach Tyrone Liu thought was more open-minded than ever. What was odd, Jackson said, was that the Clippers often couldn’t miss during training.

They tried to ease the tension in the forehead, to the point where some laughed in bewilderment during Monday’s break after missing 14 straight three-pointers. Rookie partner Brandon Boston Jr. joked with Jackson that whatever he said, he should speak more politely. Jackson told Liu to loosen the discs. Liu, a former point guard, told Jackson and Terence Mann that he might be “pretty fat, but you can borrow my wrists; I can still shoot him. “

More seriously, Liu advised everyone to keep trusting their training and keep shooting.

“Just be Reggie,” said striker Nicholas Batum. “He’ll be all right.”

“He put a lot of pressure on himself. And when you don’t shoot and the game doesn’t go the way you want it, it only makes it harder. ”

Still, when the rest of the Clippers recovered from one of their worst offensive opening halves, making 12 of their 21 threes since halftime against Thunder, Jackson made just two of his seven second-half shots before he passed. from George. On his 16th shot of the night, he scored his fifth and most important basket.

Oklahoma City called a time out, but instead of immediately returning to the Clippers bench, George stopped in the center of the Jackson-branded court.

“At a time like this, you want your boys to rally behind you,” said George.

He recalled the scene nine months earlier, when Jackson’s last-minute mistake nearly cost an incredible win in Miami. Jackson still scolded himself as teammates physically got in his way and held him until his emotions passed.

“It was just poetical to have [George] half court, ”Jackson said. “He played so well for us that he fell into a trap, and I could go out well and shoot – that was good.

“I told him that I would be confident in myself too, but I literally said that I was just happy to have it for you. And he just joked like, “I’ll always give you one chance.” Honestly, I needed it.
