When a new Tesla location is opened somewhere in Germany, you can often read about it months in advance on social media. It was the same with the most recent opening that Tesla officially announced this Thursday: Neu-Ulm is now the company’s 21st German location, which is intended as a Tesla Center for sales, service and deliveries, i.e. similar to one classic car house has. And this time the lead time between forum messages and opening was particularly long, because the center is the first in Germany to be built specifically for its purpose.
Gigafactory style Tesla center
With its increasing spread in Germany, which is accompanied by a withdrawal from expensive inner-city locations, Tesla has already taken over abandoned locations of established car brands in several cases – near Dortmund, for example, from a Porsche center, which, however, has been converted into a more stylish new building in the near. In Neu-Ulm, however, Tesla has now built itself for the first time in Germany, according to its announcement. According to the information, the new location is Tesla’s 21st center and 39th German branch in total.
The work on this began last year and was intensively supported in the Tesla Drivers and Friends Forum (TFF). Some members there initially had the impression that a small Gigafactory would grow up in Neu-Ulm based on the model of the large one in Grünheide. In fact, the first erected framework of pillars with a mezzanine reminded of this at first. The now-completed building in the southwest still has a similarly simple aesthetic as the factory near Berlin, but has been clad with darker and shiny panels instead of gray (see photo above).
Deliveries in Neu-Ulm have started
One of the company’s pop-up representations was opened in April 2021 where the new building center, which is more than 3,600 square meters in size according to Tesla, is now located. Such finished small units, in which a few employees inform customers and carry out test drives, were set up in several cases before the start with a larger location. With Neu-Ulm, the presence in southern Germany on the important Stuttgart-Munich axis will be strengthened, the announcement on the opening of the finished center now said. According to TFF reports, the first deliveries took place there in mid-August, and the service area is said to have been well stocked by the end of the month.
Update: A reader has informed teslamag.de about another reinforcement of the German Tesla presence that has not yet been made public: The location in Leipzig, which previously only served as a showroom, has also been a service center since the beginning of September, he wrote. In fact, this representation can now be found on the web both under the stores and under the workshops.
