Most states in the country have been locked down due to the corona epidemic. The government is also appealing to stay safe at home. In such a situation, when your driving license (DL) expires, you can renew your license online at home without going to the RTO. For this, you have to go through a very simple process.
In India, a driving license is valid for 20 years or up to 50 years of age. Whichever of these two comes first is applied. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MRTH) issued a statement in March stating that 18 license-related (non-communications) services may be used using Aadhaar authentication. It also includes renewal of driving license.
I tell you, the driving license can be renewed even after it has expired, because the license is issued one year before it expires permanently. It is currently exempt but you will need a new license after the exemption is removed. Citizens no longer have to go to Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to renew their licenses. Now, they can renew the license online from their home.
These documents will be required:
- Existing driving license
- Application Form No.2
- Form No. 1 (Self-Declaration as Physical Fitness of Unmanned Vehicle)
- Form No. 1A (Medical Certificate for Transport Vehicles)
- Fees applicable according to the user
To renew an online driving license, follow these steps:
1: Visit the official website of the transport service (link- https://parivahan.gov.in/.)
2: From the homepage, click Online Services, and then select Driving License Services.
3: You will be taken to a new page where you have to choose the name of your state.
4: The state will open a new page after the election. Among all the options displayed, select the ‘Apply for DL renewal’ option.
5: Now you will get a page that contains instructions for submitting the application, fill in the details here and click on the next one.
6: Upload all the documents you need now.
7: You may be asked to upload a photo and signature, although this step only applies to a few states.
8: Pay online now and verify states.
9: After the process is complete, you can download a copy of it, which can be used in the future.
Note that the application for renewal will not be considered for one month before the expiry of the license. If the application is delayed for more than five years after the expiration date of the license, the applicant must go through all the formalities to get a new license.
If you apply for renewal 30 days after the expiry of the license, the renewal or new license will be considered effective from the date of expiration. If the application is made after 30 days from the expiry of the license, the appropriate application will be deemed to be effective from the date of receipt, in which case an additional fee of Rs. 30 will be charged.
