MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (AP). Wyoming-based Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said on Tuesday that former President Donald Trump is at war “with the rule of law and the constitution” and that Republican MPs sitting silently are helping his efforts.
Cheney, a Trump critic who is deputy chairman of the Congressional committee to investigate the January 6 Capitol uprising, said the issue now is whether citizens will do their duty and “defend the Constitution and stand for the truth.”
“Are we putting the duty of our oath above party politics or will we look away from danger and threat, accept the lie and allow the liar?” Cheney asked at a First Amendment event in New Hampshire. “There is no gray area when it comes to this point. There is no middle ground. “
Cheney was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump on charges of inciting the January 6 uprising. Hundreds of Trump supporters pushed past the police forcefully, broke into the US Capitol and cut short confirmation of Joe Biden’s presidential victory in a futile attempt to keep Trump in office.
Her vehement criticism of Trump and her insistence on Congress to investigate the attack on the Capitol led to her being removed from her position as chairman of the GOP conference, leading to serious overriding challenges at home. Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, portrayed Trump and the January 6 uprising as an existential struggle for the Republican Party and democracy itself.
Several Wyoming GOP officials announced in August that they would no longer recognize Cheney as a party member because she voted to impeach Trump. Some have also announced plans to challenge Cheney next year. Trump has approved Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman.
Cheney, for her part, reported record fundraising, far exceeding the amount raised by her competitors.
On Tuesday January 6, a House committee sent subpoenas to 10 additional former officials who worked for Trump at the end of his presidency, including press secretary Kayleigh Makinani and senior adviser Stephen Miller.
