U.S. News & World Report released its 2022 Best High School Rankings in late April, ranking nearly 17,840 public high schools in the U.S. to determine which high schools were the best at providing education to students. The ranking is determined by scoring each school on six metrics: college readiness, college curriculum breadth, state assessment efficiency, state assessment performance, low student performance and graduation rate.
U.S. News & World Report ranked five high schools in Hale County, spread over several school districts. Here’s a look at the report’s rankings and data for public high schools in the Plainview area.
1. Plainview High School
Plainview High School was ranked the best public high school in the Plainview area. The Plainview Independent School District campus has a graduation rate of 94%. The high school performed best in the state rated performance category, ranking number 555 out of 1,481 Texas high schools.
Compared to the state, a greater proportion of students at Plainview High School met or exceeded the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness Standards in the math category, compared with 71% of students in the school meeting or 50% in the subject. Plainview High School is ranked 699th in the state and 8,253rd in the country.
2. Petersburg School
Petersburg ISD’s Petersburg School is the second best school in the Plainview area, according to US News’ rankings. The school is tied for the best graduation rate in the state and country at 100%.
Petersburg School was one of the top schools in the state for its rated performance, ranking number 258 statewide. In the STAAR tests, 76% of students met or mastered the grade level in the science category, and 71% did the same in math.
3. Abernathy High School
Abernathy High School is ranked as the third best high school in the Plainview area, with a graduation rate of 98% and 77% of students meeting or mastering the STAAR exam’s science subject grade level. The school was ranked the best in Texas for state assessment efficiency and performance, ranking No. 395 and No. 510, respectively. Overall, the school is number 880 in Texas and number 9,962 in the US.
4. Hale Center High School
Hale Center High School is the fourth best public high school in the Plainview area, however, it ranks at the bottom of the list of best schools in the state and nation. The school was ranked No. 1,058 in Texas and No. 11,698 in the US
The school has a graduation rate of 97% and the school’s students perform at or slightly below the state average on the STAAR test. In math, 51% of students meet or obtain a master’s grade at the subject’s master’s grade level, compared to 50% for the state. For reading and science, 46% and 56% of Hale Senator students perform at the same level, respectively, while 50% and 60% of statewide students meet at or master’s grade level for those subjects.
