Republican campaign in US suggests last-minute voting

Republican activists defending the lie that former President Donald Trump was robbed of the 2020 election have hatched a plan they say will thwart any fraudulent attempts at next month’s congressional elections Will go Strategy: Vote in person on Election Day, November 8, or – for those who vote by mail – grab the ballots and deliver them to the polling place or election office at the last minute.

The plan is based on unfounded conspiracy theories of alleged fraudsters who will manipulate the voting system in favor of Democrats when they see how many Republican votes have been accumulated early. There is no evidence of such fraud.

If the campaign works and enough voters are persuaded not to vote early, there can be long lines on Election Day, delaying the processing of mail-in ballots sent late. Those ballots almost certainly won’t be counted until the next day.

“It will slow everything down,” said Noah Pretz, a former Cook County, Illinois, elections clerk who now advises local election offices on best practices and safety. “In many places, if you don’t get ballots in the mail by Election Day, you don’t count them until after Election Day.”

There is no evidence of widespread fraud, fraud or tampering of voting machines in the 2020 election. Extensive examinations on Trump’s battlefield upheld Joe Biden’s victory, and several judges, including some Republican appointees, dismissed lawsuits filed by the former president and his aides. ,

That hasn’t stopped the spread of conspiracy theories over the past two years, by Trump and his allies, including billionaire Mike Lindell and a host of Republican candidates running for office this year. Calls to withhold ballots until the last minute have increased in recent weeks, according to a review of social media accounts by The Associated Press.

“It’s very easy to uncover any fraud like this,” Lindell said in a recent interview with the Associated Press. Lindell, who has promoted the strategy on podcasts and various events, has tried to prove that voting machines in 2020 were rigged in Biden’s favor.

Trump also backed the campaign, saying at a recent rally that voting was better on Election Day because “it would be harder for them to cheat like this.”

The Conservatives’ move comes after the use of mail-in ballots during the 2020 election amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The end of pandemic restrictions, Trump’s attacks on mail-in voting and new restrictions on voting in some Republican-ruled states have led to a decline in the use of mail-in ballots this year, but they remain a popular option. ,

Experts say that last-minute rush of ballot papers will create delays which can be used to undermine public confidence in elections.

“This is an opportunity for people to start asking questions and sowing distrust,” said Chris Piper, former commissioner of the Virginia Department of Elections.
