Los Angeles, January 6. The Republican candidate for Harris County (Texas) judge, Alexandra Del Moral Meiler, asked for a repeat of the elections, where Democrat Lina Hidalgo won, who managed to be re-elected as the county’s top overseeing authority, prosecutor The office announced this on Friday.
Hidalgo, 31, won his second term as Harris County judge by nearly 11,000 votes in a close race for the top executive job in the most populous county in Texas.
“After careful review and analysis of the available facts, I have decided to challenge the result,” Meiller said on Twitter.
He added that “all voters in Harris County should be deeply concerned about voter suppression and welcome full transparency to ensure free and fair elections.”
Miller requested that the more than 1 million ballots cast in Harris be nullified and that another election be held in the county.
County Attorney Christian D. Menefee said this is the third request he has received to void the election results and he expects more because today is the last day to do so.
“This is a shameful attempt by a group of losing candidates who failed to win the hearts and minds of Harris County voters and are now spouting nonsensical legal theories … Every one of them should be deeply ashamed and The claims should not be taken seriously by the public,” Menefee said.
Hidalgo is considered a rising star among Texas Democrats and has been the target of Republican attacks since taking office in 2018.
Judge faced stiff competition from West Point graduate and former Army captain Miller, who beat him in a multimillion-dollar fundraising campaign.
Although the county has a Democratic majority on its governing board and in voter turnout, Judge found himself in trouble in the campaign amid a “red wave” promoted by the Republican Party.
Born in Colombia and raised in Peru and Mexico before immigrating to the US with her family in 2005, Hidalgo was first elected in 2018 as magistrate for Harris County, in which the city of Houston is located.
Hidalgo requested a license this week to travel to Colombia to visit his grandfather who is very ill.
