As members of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol uprising drew their gruesome conclusions on prime-time television Thursday night, many Republicans wanted to talk about literally something else.
While police officers testified about risking their lives to protect members of Congress, many of those lawmakers were tweeting outrageous or completely unrelated things to divert attention from the proceedings.
Ten minutes before the trial began, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) tweeted about Democrats “ignoring America’s crime crisis”—apparently forgetting that hundreds of thousands were charged for crimes related to that day. 6 rioters have been charged.
Additionally, McCarthy shared a crude two hour video With graphic violence, with text saying things like “Democratic Party is for the breakdown of society”.
As the hearing went on, the GOP leader retweeted a member complaining of Democrats not voting in person during the coronavirus pandemic.
“It is fascinating to see Democrats packed into a full committee room even though many of them used proxy voting as an excuse for not working for the past 2 years,” Rep. Fred Keller (R-Pa.) wrote at 8:20 p.m. EDT — As committee vice chairman, Liz Cheney (R-Vy.) described how Donald Trump “reversed the presidential election and the transfer of presidential power.” Supervised and coordinated a sophisticated seven-part plan to stop.”
At 8:43, the official Twitter account of the Republican Party tweeted: “Joe Biden hasn’t had a press interview in 121 days.”
At 9:15 p.m., the No. 3 House Republican, Alice Stefnik of New York, appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program “Straight to Set the Record”. [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi’s partisan show Witch Hunt.”
This came as the selection committee swore to Officer Caroline Edwards, who described the “battle scene” at the Capitol: “There were officers on the ground. They were bleeding. They were throwing up. I saw friends with blood on their faces.” Looked soaked. I was slurping in people’s blood,” said Edwards, who suffered a brain injury in the January 6 riots.
Around the same time, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) wrote: “The partisan committee of January 6 is nothing more than an illegitimate show trial.”
At 9:36, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee tweeted, “Still reading the teleprompter,” an apparent reference to committee chairman Benny Thompson (R-Miss.), who was speaking at the time.
On the House floor Thursday, far-right Republicans said Democrats used the hearing to divert attention from real-world problems plaguing Americans.
Biggs said, “They don’t want you to talk about the pack size of tortillas that I bought last week before I came out — they looked like regular corn tortillas, now they look like mini tortillas. ” “Same price, same packaging.”
He also suggested that Pelosi (D-Calif.) intentionally left the Capitol vulnerable to attack on January 6, 2021. and rape. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-Ga.) complained that Capitol rioters were being treated as “political prisoners of war.” and reiterated his insistence that the entire attack was a setup by the FBI.
Separately, Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) announced that if Republicans retake the House, they would launch an investigation into the committee on January 6.
McCarthy, for his part, reiterated his unrelenting claim that “everyone in the country” takes responsibility for what happened at the Capitol that day.
