Republicans regained control of the US House of Representatives, but by a much smaller margin than they had predicted. A significant disappointment for a party that had for weeks been hoping for a landslide victory that would set the stage for the 2024 presidential election.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday night that more than a week after Election Day, and still with several seats up for grabs, the party won the 218 seats needed to control the chamber.

Yet the slim majority gives the GOP power over House investigative committees with subpoena authority to investigate Biden’s cabinet and his relatives, as well as Silicon Valley companies that conservatives say are biased against him.
Republicans have also promised to cut public spending, expand fossil fuel production and extend Trump-era tax cuts for the wealthy. However, much of that agenda would be left to the Democratic-controlled Senate.
The Senate remained in Democratic hands after John Fetterman took the Republican seat in Pennsylvania, and Mark Kelly and Catherine Cortez Masto were declared winners in Arizona and Nevada in the days following the election. The Georgia Senate race between Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker will be decided in a runoff on Dec. 6.
