Research shows that moderate alcohol consumption can be beneficial for heart health

A study by researchers at Monash University in Australia found that moderate alcohol consumption was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and lower mortality from all causes, compared with zero alcohol consumption.

The study involved more than 18,000 people over 70 in the United States and Australia. This is the first study to examine the effects of alcohol consumption on heart health.

It was found that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Robin Woods is an assistant professor in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University.

“Taking or consuming five to ten alcoholic drinks a week, which is rather modest, gave better results than those who were completely drinkers. This appears to have been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease as well as all-cause mortality, ”Woods said.

The researchers said their results should be interpreted with caution because the study participants were healthy and had no history of heart or other serious illnesses, and might also be more physically and socially active than the broader aging population.

It is not known exactly how moderate alcohol consumption can reduce the risk of heart disease and other causes of death.

Associate Professor Woods says more research is needed.

“There is some evidence that moderate alcohol consumption has vascular properties that may be beneficial. But there is also the potential for social benefits. So, you know, drinking alcohol with friends, family and so on can be beneficial, ”Woods said.

A study from Monash University in Melbourne is published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

The Australian Foundation Against Drugs and Alcohol Guidelines, a leading public health organization, recommend that men and women consume no more than 10 standard drinks per week. The standard drink in Australia contains 10 grams of alcohol.
