It all started last Wednesday when residents contacted the Langreo City Council to alert them to the presence of cracks in the road. Municipal technicians decided to close the road while waiting for the ground to settle and plugging of the crack could be done. It wasn’t, the crack kept getting bigger and bigger and it hasn’t rained in recent days, neighbors say.
Beatriz García, one of those affected, explains that “the city council told me that the crack is already 35 cm wide and it is going to get longer.” She, her parents and her grandmother have lived in the same area all their lives and have now seen how to get to their homes, they have to use a road that used to be a one-way street and now they have turned it into a one-way street. It has been enabled as a two-way street. Garcia asks the city council for a solution. On the one hand, a temporary solution, “Traffic lights are installed to control traffic on the road we use now because there are dangerous sections without visibility where it is impossible for two cars to pass at the same time.” But on the other hand they demand a definite solution. “The road is crumbling and the city council should solve it,” residents say.
In addition to cracks in the road, neighbors have verified how soil movement has also occurred on the slope in recent days. “We do not know what is the reason for what is happening but it happens that two works have been done and trees have been cut and excavations have been done. Nothing had happened, and until these works were carried out It rained all the time”, he says. Neighbors also warn about the instability of the land that once housed “mining operations and dumps”.
The neighbors demand solutions “and we don’t care who is to blame,” they insist.
