Resuming the Gascon recall effort

LOS ANGELES—With their original recall campaign waning, organizers of the effort to oust Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon announced on September 16 that they had formed a new political committee and would start all over again.

The original recall effort was hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic health mandate, with a “premature start”, according to a statement from the organisers. Therefore, the effort will be restarted under a new campaign committee called “Recall District Attorney George Gascon”.

According to the organizers, “the reset recall will allow District Attorney George Gascon to gather the necessary financial resources before beginning the 160-day period for signature collection.”

“The committee will file an updated petition with the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters shortly.”

Despite the failure of the original attempt, the organizers said they were committed to recalling Gascon, which has come under fire from critics for a progressive agenda, including demands for the death penalty and increased punishment in criminal cases. Includes instructions to leave.

Gascon has repeatedly defended his policies, saying that his stance was well known during his campaign and that his election indicated public support of his agenda.

In their statement, the organizers of the recall said, “Make no mistake, this isn’t a white flag – it’s a double whammy on our efforts.”

A spokesperson for the campaign told the Los Angeles Times that the original recall drive had collected nearly 200,000 signatures. The group needed about 580,000 signatures by 26 October to call the election back.
