Québec solidaire proposes to eliminate daycare fees in schools to help Quebec parents make ends meet. A measure that would allow families to save up to $1,600 a year for each child.
“This is the most expensive back to school in history, parents can’t afford it, everything is too expensive!”, argued the unity MP Ruba Ghazal.
According to him, eliminating the prices of child care offered to students in the morning, at noon, in the evening and on educational days will give a little breathing room to the middle class, which has seen a decrease in power to buy it because of ‘inflation.
It currently costs $9.20 per day to parents for a child attending daycare at the school on a regular basis. But during the education days, the fee can easily double, depending on the establishments and activities offered.
Free public school
Free public education should be free, insisted the member for Mercier. “This adds up to a bad bill. Students are in school, there is no need to pay for free public school in today’s context, where often both parents work.
Fewer children go home for dinner or return from school after school.
“It existed when the mother stayed at home,” added the elected official. (Making parents pay for school care), which has no reason to be, it must belong to our public network!
Eliminating school daycare fees would cost the public coffers $400 million annually, Ruba Ghazal estimated.
The latter claimed that the move would also benefit wealthy parents. But Quebec opted for free public schools for all. The income tax then helps to redistribute wealth, lined up the MP.
