35 weeks pregnant and trying to escape the dangers in Colombia, a woman and her husband crossed the border and arrived in Washington DC the day before Title 42 was due to expire.
Ana Milena, a pseudonym we will use to protect her identity, described her dramatic journey exclusively to Telemundo 44.
“My husband was hit with a gun in the hospital once, they took him to the hospital. All these threats started in June of last year and each time it intensified, once in February this year they abused me and this was the radical reason why we had already thought of emigrating to Colombia.
Looking at this scenario, the couple decided to travel to the United States. Ana Milena, who also suffers from diabetes and hypothyroidism, said one of the biggest challenges during the process was crossing the Rio Grande.
“They picked us up and told us once and for all that we had to go and swim. Then we had to swim across the river. My husband lifted me on his shoulders and was trying to pass me first so that my Insulin pump should not get wet and second because of my pregnancy because the current is very strong.”
However, upon arriving in McAllen, he says he was detained by the Border Patrol. Ana Milena was detained for one day and her husband for two, but thanks to the help of relatives, they were able to buy bus tickets to DC, where they only stayed for a few days. Are.
Similarly, the woman highlighted the challenge of giving birth in a new country by seeking the help of the community.
“That things that you suddenly don’t use or that you’ve stopped using for your baby, well I’ll take it with all the love and affection in the world because at this point I don’t even have his diapers, Neither are its bottles. Yes, I am very scared because if tomorrow comes what will I give her? How will I get it?”, she questioned.
Ana Milena and her husband are in the process of political asylum and hope this new beginning will bring them the peace of mind they say they have lost in their home country.
