Rivals of the President of France: critical moments, personal life

PARIS ( Associated Press) – As French voters elect the president on SundayThey are choosing between two perspectives on France – and two completely different ones.

Here’s a look at two candidates:

Emmanuel Macron

In just five years, current President Emmanuel Macron has gone from a young novice in politics to a major world player and key decision-maker in the European Union, deeply involved in Russia’s efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. Huh.,

The outspoken 44-year-old centrist, with his non-stop diplomatic activism, hasn’t always had his way, but has earned his place on the international scene.

At home, he managed to gain some popularity after a “yellow vest” protest against social injustice. Sent its approval for record lows in 2018. Many French in opinion polls praise his president’s stature and consider him for the job in the face of major global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict.

They also show that they are often perceived as arrogant and out of touch with ordinary people.

Macron has been dubbed the “president of the rich”, especially during the yellow vest crisis. Some critics also condemn a perceived authoritarian attitude, blaming them for violent incidents involving police during street protests.

The job of president is his first elected office, although he came with a strong pedigree.

Macron studied at the cole Nationale d’Administration, France’s elite school, and was a senior civil servant, then for a few years a banker in Rothschild, then economic advisor to socialist president François Hollande.

He emerged from that backstage role on the political scene when he was appointed Minister of Economy in Holland’s government from 2014 to 2016.

A series of political surprises – including a corruption scandal involving a major rival – propelled him to a presidential victory in 2017. He defeated Le Pen in that race on promises to boost job creation and free up France’s economy to attract foreign investment.

Macron, who describes himself as a “president who believes in Europe”, argues that the EU is the way for France to become stronger in the globalized world.

A strong proponent of the entrepreneurial spirit, he has relaxed the rules for hiring and firing workers and made it harder to obtain unemployment benefits. Critics accused him of destroying worker safety.

Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and he acknowledged the state’s vital role in supporting the economy, spending massively and vowing to support employees and business through public assistance “whatever the cost.”

Earlier this month at his biggest election rally near Paris, Macron paid a touching tribute to his wife Brigitte, the man “I care about most.” They can be seen kissing each other on the huge screen of the stadium.

As First Lady, Brigitte Macron, who is 24 years older than her, has been involved in charity and other programs promoting culture, education and health.

their romance began when she was a student in high school where she was teaching in northern France. At that time a married mother of three children, she was looking after the drama club. Literature lover Macron was its member.

Macron moved to Paris for the final year of his high school. She eventually moved to the French capital to join him and got divorced. They married in 2007.

Marine Le Pen

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen, in her third bid for the French presidency, is, if not determined, nothing like her firebrand father, who co-founded the anti-immigration party she now leads.

He is as spirited and gritty as father Jean-Marie, who ran for the country’s highest office five times. Since he inherited his National Front party in 2011, he has worked to break down the wall of distant fear that has been blocking his path to the presidency so far.

Polls show she is trailing, but closer than ever to victory. If elected, she would seek to transform French politics and society into her “French-first” vision.

He renamed it the National Front and ousted his father in 2015, part of his effort to rid the national rally in the name of the stains of racism and antisemitism that had lingered on for decades.

Family dramas have long been at the center of the Le Pen dynasty. She has armored herself over the years, and keeps her personal life to herself.

When his popular niece, Marion Marechal, a former party legislator, left the national rally, Marine Le Pen was able to keep it from becoming another public family feud. Marechal – whom Le Pen helped lift – deepened the betrayal by backing far-right rival Eric Zemour in the first round of the presidential election.

A shrewd politician, Le Pen has changed his image from an aggressive, anti-system proponent to that of a forgotten spokesman for France.,

Le Pen, 53, who has two daughters and a son and is divorced, shares his home with his childhood sweetheart and their beloved cats.

Born in 1968 in a western Paris suburb, Marion Anne Perrin Le Pen wrote that she was raised “on the acid of honey and politics.”

Her parents’ marriage publicly ended in a bitter divorce—after which her mother, Pierrete Lalaney, dressed less as a maidservant for the French edition of Playboy in 1987. He said he did it when Jean-Marie Le Pen told him that if he needed money he should clean the house.

Le Pen has successfully kept his children in the shadow of his political career, sparing the risks he and his sisters have endured.

Le Pen is a lawyer by training and before entering politics, among her clients were immigrants living illegally in France – whom she wants to expel as a politician. It is one of many paradoxes that define Le Pen. Another is her relationship with some members of the now banned extreme right-wing movement whom she met in law school – a relationship she neither denies nor defines.
