Teaching Associate Professor Samantha Robinson

Samantha Robinson, director of data science for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, associate professor of teaching and Julia A. The Hicks Endowed Chair is elected to a two-year term by membership of the American Statistical Association. Executive Committee of the Statistics and Data Science Education Section commencing from January 2023.

The mission of the Statistics and Data Science Education Section is to “promote the teaching and learning of data-driven inquiry at any level for any audience” and works tirelessly to promote improvements in statistics and data science education. The section supports the development of courses, programs and curricula that serve all individuals, ranging from those who will not use statistical methods professionally but must appreciate evidence-based investigations and results, Those who will work in areas where statistical technology provides the most efficient. The process of attacking unsolved problems for those pursuing careers as statisticians and data scientists in industry, academia or government.

This section covers statistics and data science through “K-12 two-year colleges, four-year colleges and universities” by disseminating information, organizing events and communicating collaboratively with other societies, associations and otherwise relevant stakeholders. Strives to improve plumbing for professionals”. The Executive Committee provides the supervision and leadership of the entire SSDSE section.

Robinson serves as course coordinator for all classes in Principles of Statistics (STAT 2303) and Biostatistics (STAT 2823), with an annual student enrollment of approximately 1,500–1,700 students. She drafted the Arkansas Course Transfer System learning objectives for Principles of Statistics, directly affecting all two-year and four-year institutions in the state of Arkansas, and most recently K-12 and college-level statistics and data science. Helped to align education objectives, while serving on the Arkansas Mathematics Pathways Task Force Alignment Working Group. Robinson’s extensive experience in statistics and data science education at all levels makes him particularly suitable for the role of the SSDSE Executive Committee.

“I am thrilled to be selected for this role and look forward to serving on this committee of nationally recognized statisticians and statistical educators,” Robinson said. “I am particularly excited to be working with my fellow committee members to improve educational opportunities in statistics and data science for all individuals at all levels, regardless of where they live.”

In recent years, Robinson has led groups of student researchers at conferences, presenting statistical research that has resulted in publications for student researchers, oral presentations, poster presentations, and numerous awards. Robinson has also recently been recognized for his distinguished university teaching and his contributions to statistics education at the university, regional and national levels. Robinson has been teaching in the Department of Mathematical Sciences in various roles for nearly 10 years, with his first full-time teaching appointment in 2013.
