Ronald Schmidt obituary (2021)

Schmidt, Ronald Lee

Gotham – Ronald Lee Schmidt, age 82, passed away peacefully at home in Gotham, Wis., on Wednesday, November 3, 2021. He was born on August 20, 1939, the son of Leonard Robert and Gladys Downey (Schweiger) Schmidt. Clifford Township, Monroe County, Wis. He married Marilyn Mary Mayfield on June 10, 1961 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Richland Center.

After graduating from Ithaca High School in 1957, Ron immediately served in the US Marine Corps for four years. While stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he achieved the rank of lance corporal. Upon returning home in 1961, Ron began farming with his parents on the old Clarence Cooper Farm in Gotham. Marilyn and her first son were married soon after. Ron grew the farm over the years, expanding from milking about 40 cows on 160 acres to milking 120 cows on 600 acres. Ron and Marilyn were proudly named as Outstanding Young Farmer for Richland County in 1970. This week, the families of his son, Randy, and grandson, Ryan, will be honored in a similar way.

While farming, Ron helped several hired men get off on the right foot. He was always ready to help out a fellow farmer, neighbor or friend who could use a hand or a few dollars. He enjoyed driving and repairing machinery, teaching many people how to drive tractors. He enjoyed the fall harvest to the fullest by driving his TR75 New Holland Combination. The fall of 2021 was Ron’s last crop.

While not farming, Ron enjoys life to the fullest, be it car races, badgers games, hunting trips or hanging out with good friends. “I’m glad you saw me” was a popular wisdom of his. Ron and Marilyn loved dancing and traveling. Trips included boating the Hawaiian Islands and the Mississippi River with friends, going from La Crosse to St. Louis via 24 locks. Ron’s grandchildren were also a major attraction in his life, and he loved attending their events.
