AUCKLAND, New Zealand ( Associated Press) — Third-seeded Casper Ruud crashed out of the Auckland tournament on Wednesday after losing 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) to Laslo Djere in the second round.
On his side, Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman (third seed) had to retire due to a groin injury, after losing the first set of his match against American Jensen Brooksby.
Norway’s Ruud (1st) missed only four of his first serves in the first set and continued to put pressure on Jarre. But things changed in the second round, when Ruud hit just three of his first eight serves in the first two games.
Thus, the Serbian secured the break which put him ahead 3–1.
Jere also started taking command with the serve. He set 16 aces in the second and third sets – nine in the decider.
The match was shifted to indoor court due to rain.
“It’s been a long time since I beat a top-10 tennis player,” Jere said. I have lost many matches in a row and definitely I fought hard for it. I reacted after being set down and won the tiebreaker in the third.
Cameron Norrie (second) saw the Brit beat Czech Jiri Lehka 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3 before the match lasted nearly six hours because of rain.
The duel started just before 1 pm and ended well after 6 pm after three stoppages due to rain and moving to an indoor court.
In other matches, American Marcos Giron beat JJ Wolf 6-4, 6-4 and France’s Richard Gasquet beat Portuguese Joao Sousa 7-6(2), 6-2.
