Rural development shows that the cereal sector makes decisions about large crops in which the varieties are considered most suitable for drought in Navarre.

The Minister of Rural Development and the Environment, Itziar Gómez, accompanied the agricultural regions to the large crop trials that INTIA is developing in the various agro-climatic regions of Navarre, analyzing the behavior of the varieties planted and the strategies used. pest and disease control. The purpose of these tours is to enable them to see, first hand, the research work that is carried out by these machines.

The Department of Rural Development and Environment finances experimentation activities applied in the framework “Consent for the promotion of research, development and innovation in the field of agriculture and experiments in the art of agricultural production”.

Through this agreement, INTIA has established more than 240 field trials in Navarre in various areas, agricultural and livestock, both in organic and conventional production, in which different crop management strategies are tested.

In this type of open days, some experiences are shown, from which the recommendations that INTIA makes to agricultural regions through the policy, in large winter crops, in cold weather droughts.

In the words of advisor Itziar Gómez, “the current site of drought highlights the importance of researching varieties that are more adapted to the climate and transfer this knowledge to the sector. Projects like these, which are adapted in VITA NAdapta to implement climate change through INTIA, are a very useful tool for farmers.

During this visit to the installed testing plots located in the town of Orkoien, the agricultural sector was able to see the efforts of providing varieties of different living products. In particular, more than 200 types of wheat, barley, oats, and other types of vegetables (broad beans, peas, chickpeas, lentils, vetches, and yarrow) are shown.

For her part, Natalia Bellostas, managing director of INTIA, mentioned that in addition to varietal selection, the application of the most appropriate cultural techniques is of the greatest importance. “In the case of fertilization, the new PAC Subscription requires a plan adapted to the crops and soil climate conditions, so that fertilizers are used in the most efficient way. For this reason, these tests show different fertilization methods according to the variety, which allow us to identify the most important varieties in the use of nitrogen. In the trials also we have tested different methods of biostimulant application, with the aim of optimizing the use of mineral fertilizers”.

During the day, it was also affirmed that the use of herbicides should be carried out in a rational way, for which different strategies should be used, in order to explain the existing problems.

It is possible to consider another important aspect, with a lower intensity this time compared to previous years, are the problems of fungi in crops, vegetables or oilseeds, and whose strategies have been tested in these trials.
