BERLIN (NWN) – A Russian diplomat has died in Berlin, in what the Russian embassy called a “tragic accident” on Friday.
It said the incident involving the embassy employee happened on October 19, but gave no details of what happened.
The Russian embassy released its statement after German news magazine Der Spiegel, which did not name sources, reported that the 35-year-old had apparently fallen from the top floor of the embassy building in central Berlin. It said the police found her body outside the embassy and were unable to revive it.
Germany’s foreign ministry said on Friday it was aware of the matter, but could not comment, citing confidentiality reasons. Berlin police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office also declined to comment.
Russian embassy that “all procedures relating to repatriation of the diplomat’s body … were resolved promptly with the responsible German law enforcement and medical authorities in accordance with current practices.”
Der Spiegel reported that the man had been listed as second secretary at the Russian embassy since 2019, but was reportedly thought by German security officials to work for Russia’s FSB intelligence agency.
The embassy statement said that “we consider the speculation in many Western media to be absolutely false in light of this tragic incident.”
