SAN ANTONIO; Texas. – The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) has proposed closing 19 of its 98 campuses due to school declines.
This Monday, September 17, the assembly heard the recommendation of Superintendent Jaime Aquino and his governing body to adjust the size of the district.
It was reported that of the 19 schools proposing closure, 17 would close in 2024, at the end of this school year; and two more would close in 2025.
It also said students currently attending schools that could be canceled would be moved to other campuses.
Through videos presented to parents, school officials said declining enrollment over the years is forcing the district to relocate students from some campuses to conserve resources.
According to the data presented, of the 55,000 students who enrolled in 1998, only 35,000 enrolled last school year.
Parents reacted negatively to the proposal because they believe this change would affect the neediest students.
“We have children with special needs and yet they decide to close the schools?” said a mother before the meeting.
“Lucía is an amazing and intelligent girl, and she happens to be Level 2 autistic. Lamar is the only school that can provide her with the special accommodations she needs,” one student’s mother told the audience.
The district assured that needs will be met in the schools to which they are assigned.
