Salernitana re-hires coach Davide Nicola

SALErno, Italy ( Associated Press) – Salernitana re-hired coach Davide Nicola, two days after the Serie A club fired him.

The 49-year-old helmsman was sacked following an 8-2 defeat at Atalanta on Monday. The defeat left the club in 16th place in the table, nine points above the relegation zone. The group in which Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa plays has gone six games in a row without a win.

But club president Danilo Ervolino reversed the club’s decision on Wednesday, saying Nicola was the “ideal coach” to face for the rest of the season.

“He has to return with energy, courage and as a charismatic leader of the team,” he added.

“We cannot be disappointed by what happened on Sunday,” he said in statements published on the club’s website.

Ervolino assured that Nicola still wanted to resume leadership of the team, as had been the case following his early dismissal.

“I spoke to the president to reconsider my dismissal, knowing that I have an open-minded sensibility and want to create a different type of football,” Nicola said on his social networks. “It is because I love Salerno and I believe blindly in this project.”

In a first, Nicola was appointed as coach of Salernitana last February when the team was fighting for stability and he managed to straighten the course.

Back in the first division after an absence of more than 20 years, Salernitana sailed almost the entire campaign at the bottom of the table. But with Nicola in charge, Salernitana added 18 points in the last 15 days to continue in division honours.

He was rewarded with a new two-year contract which he signed in June.
