What is saliva made of?
99% of saliva is made up of water and 1% is made up of solids like some proteins. The mixed composition provides various benefits of saliva. For example, while eating, the aqueous percentage moistens the tongue to perceive flavors while some proteins of the enzyme type soften the food. So, thanks to saliva, the taste of some delicious bean tacos can be felt.
In addition to contributing to good eating, saliva also contributes to speaking clearly. The sound produced in the mouth is better when the teeth, tongue and lips are lubricated. Water and mucin proteins are what provide the lubricating ability of saliva to achieve good phonation. For this reason, before having an important conversation or bursting into a song, it is advisable to rinse your mouth thoroughly with saliva.
Saliva is also a defensive barrier against some microorganisms because it contains enzymes with antimicrobial activity. Those enzymes stick to bacteria that live in the mouth and cause the worms to die. Other proteins can bind many bacteria together like a bunch of balloons to kill them by pulling them into the stomach. Both processes maintain a balance of health in the mouth and in general health.
Saliva is a slimy and potent liquid. Its amazing properties make it as valuable as other body fluids. It would be colourless, but its composition and benefits make it a shiny liquid.
