San Francisco authorities have formally challenged the California regulator’s decision to allow Cruise and Waymo to expand commercial passenger transportation using self-driving cars.
This is what we know
According to city officials, the decision ignores safety and environmental risks. They are demanding the suspension of permits and a review of the permitting process.
City Attorney David Chiu filed the request on behalf of the transportation and planning authorities. He accused the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) of ignoring public safety and environmental issues in the use of drones.
Chiu called on the CPUC to impose new reporting requirements on robotaxi promoters with detailed data on accidents and violations. It also advocated for the gradual expansion of the use of drones based on safety parameters.
