Sarah McLachlan pulls the strings of the soul with fake PSA for online stores

Advertising function McLachlan’s song “Angel”, which plays on images of plaintive-looking dogs and cats, as well as sobering statistics on animal cruelty.

The singer herself admitted that she finds advertising so heartbreaking that she avoids it whenever possible.

“I’m changing the channel. I can’t stand it, McLachlan told HuffPost in 2014. “I can’t even look at it. It’s so depressing.”

Now, the singer is applying her tear-jerking and awareness-raising talents in a spoofed PSA for another forgotten group: the internet carts.

In the video, McLachlan laments that 70% of online shoppers’ carts end up being abandoned during the checkout process – you know when you click or close a tab instead of taking the final step to complete a purchase. In fact, “PSA” is an advertisement for Bolt, a company that provides online stores with a one-click payment option.

“Please say that you will be the answer to an innocent cart whose dreams are shattered by questions like “Is your billing address the same as your home address?” MacLachlan pleads with the viewer.

Then, in a gentle melody, the singer encourages listeners to try Bolt for themselves. “Please come on, we have Sarah [bleep] MacLachlan,” he sings inaccurately.

Bolt says it has donated $50,000 to the ASPCA and sells merchandise on its website, with some of the funds also going to the organization.

According to Fast Company, the Bolt ad was created thanks to Ryan Reynolds’ agency Maximum Effort, which also created the recent ill-fated Peloton ad starring actor Chris Noth. Peloton pulled the ad after several women accused Knot of sexual assault.
