Saskatoon – Residents are advised to take precautions to prevent the spread of bird flu

Bird flu is a viral infection that can spread easily and rapidly among birds.

Saskatoon – The city of Saskatoon is encouraging residents to take precautions when dealing with or interacting with wild birds to help prevent the spread of avian influenza or bird flu.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture confirmed earlier this month that a snow goose found near the town of Elrose had tested positive. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency collected samples that showed the snow swan carries highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

This confirmation follows the detection of HPAI in poultry and wild birds in the United States and several Canadian provinces.

In addition, city officials would like to remind the public that the nesting season for Canada geese has begun. Geese are known to guard their nests and will become aggressive if you get too close to their rest.

People are advised to take extra precautions and awareness if they are in areas near potential nesting sites.

Bird flu is a viral infection that can spread easily and rapidly among birds. Some wild bird species, such as ducks, can carry the virus and infect other birds without becoming ill themselves.

Other bird species are more likely to become seriously ill and die when infected with certain types of avian influenza.

Officials say the public health risk is very low and there is no threat to food security.

The city asks everyone to help respond to the ongoing outbreak by not hand-feeding birds, temporarily closing bird feeders that encourage birds to congregate and not touching sick or dead birds .

Residents are encouraged to report any sick or dead birds they have to the Ministry of Environment Investigation Center at 1-800-567-4224 or email [email protected] is done.

The Saskatoon Forestry Farms Park and Zoo has temporarily moved all bird species at the zoo to a secure facility to protect them from avian influenza.
