SC sends notice to Twitter-center, directs to prepare system against traitorous and inflammatory posts

Supreme Court on Friday (February 12, 2021) on a PIL sent to the Center and Twitter Notice Issued and directed to stop abusive language and abusive content on social media platforms. The case has been clubbed with another petition. The Supreme Court has asked the government what can be done on their behalf after such messages come on Twitter?

The petition sought to develop a system to check ‘traitorous’ and ‘anti-India’ Twitter content and advertisements that spread hate through fake news and fake messages. A petition was filed in May 2020 in the Supreme Court for monitoring on Twitter. The PIL demanded a mechanism to monitor the content posted on Twitter.

It said that in the absence of a mechanism or legislation to check online content, social media platforms such as Twitter and other sites were used by some individuals to ‘enhance activities against the spirit of the Union of India’. is.

The petition filed by BJP leader Vineet Goenka said that hundreds of fake Twitter handles and bogus Facebook accounts have been created in the names of celebrities and dignitaries.

The petition also states that these fake Twitter handles and Facebook accounts use real photographs of constitutional officers and famous citizens and that is why common people believe the messages issued from such Twitter handles and Facebook accounts .

This notice of the Supreme Court comes amid an ongoing feud between the Center and Twitter. On Thursday itself, Twitter had more than 97% accounts banned. These accounts were found to support Pakistan-Khalistan as well as inciting people using inflammatory hashtags like ‘massacre of farmers’.

The petition also demanded that KYC of all social media account holders including Twitter-Facebook needs to be done, so that those who share inflammatory and hate posts on social media can be easily identified. A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde, comprising Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, said that it is issuing notice in this case and tagging this petition along with other pending cases.
