The 2022/23 Rugby World Series 7s kicks off in London, Great Britain this weekend of 20-21 May.
At the last stop of the World Series, the competition has the last two direct spots available in men’s rugby 7s for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, with New Zealand and Argentina having already qualified. Four teams are still fighting for them: Fiji, Australia, Samoa and South Africa.
With 138 points in the overall standings, two-time Olympic champions Fiji are the closest team to qualifying for Paris 2024 in London, while Australia are not far away with 125 points.
Meanwhile, Samoa and South Africa have 116 points each and need to win the tournament in London to gain 22 points and hope that their rivals’ results are not outstanding for Olympic tickets.
They are already classified, on the other hand, France, as the host nation; The All Black 7s as leaders (and mathematically champions) this season; and Los Pumas 7s, after accumulating enough points to finish second, and therefore, among the top four teams of this season.
However, the World Series is not the only way to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, so teams that do not make it to London will still have opportunities.
