School removed pro-spending article as ‘Ascham Army’ mobilized for head girl

“This is going to ignite a fuse in Sydney’s east of the highest suburbs,” he said. “It is not that a school cannot lay claim to someone who has made a political career for himself. But I think the right decision is to wait till someone gets elected, or at least you don’t campaign for them.

Sky Leckie, another former Ascham participant, who is also a Liberal and a Sharma supporter, agreed. “I think it’s disrespectful to use a school as a platform for politics,” she said. To inform,

Ascham School was contacted for comment on Friday afternoon, but did not respond before the deadline. Neither Sharma nor Spender wanted to comment. Escham board member Stefan Garten said he was unaware of the matter.

On the other side of the book, some Assam alumni think they should do even more to get their old girl elected. Some suggested that the boys’ school would do everything possible to help their boy win.

Lauren Miller, who was in the ’95’s spender class, says she cried at the launch of her Head Girl campaign at Paddington RSL last year.

“Everyone should be doing more,” Miller says. “She is fully supported by the army of old girls of Ascham. They’re showing up for him. I can see my contacts moving.”

Miller, the daughter of the late celebrity agent Harry M. Miller, is now the chief executive of his agency HMMG. She says the Spender campaign, which drew public support from former ASCHAM principal Rowena Danziger, was “a masterstroke”, as “she would not do it lightly”.

Danziger ran Escham for 31 years until 2003, educating thousands of daughters in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and beyond. Wentworth voters “will be safe” in Spender’s hands, he assured voters in a video published by Spender’s campaign this week.

Danziger said that while she would not comment on school matters, she had “heard no whisper of real conflict”.

The article’s author, Holly Marsh, said it was not meant to be political. “We’ll never go there,” she said. The piece was included in the April Old Girls newspaper, among other stories about “change makers and ground breakers”.

“if there are any [other] Ascham girls who run for federal politics, we will definitely profile them,” Marsh said. She was not aware that the article had been removed from the school’s website, but said she would not investigate further. “I have a lot of fish to fry,” she said.

Gabby Stricker-Phelps, the adopted daughter of former Independent Wentworth MP Karin Phelps and his wife Jackie, graduated from Ascham in 2017. He said it was important that the school did not become “an echo chamber”.

“If it’s anything like the day I was there, it covers a wide variety of ideas,” she said.

“One thing I do know about the girls of Assachem… is we are taught how to think critically. Despite the uproar about whether or not the old girls are contributing to Allegra or Dave or whatever, the best part is that we’re a mixed group. ,

Stryker-Phelps said he doubts the election will be a hot topic in his five-year reelection, which is taking place at the Hotel Bondi in a few weeks.

“But you never know,” she said. “We are spoiled for election in this electorate. Isn’t it amazing that the Ascham community is right at the center of this? We have seen [Sydney] For a long time, grammar was the home of prime ministers and the home of leaders. But Asham is coming!”
