Schwarber scored 2 home runs; Phillies Crush Nationals

WASHINGTON ( Associated Press) — Kyle Schwarber homed twice, Jack Wheeler made his third straight start and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 10-1 on Thursday to begin the five-match series.

Philadelphia, who scored seven runs in the third inning, have won 12 of their last 14 meetings and improved 11-2 under interim manager Rob Thompson.

Washington, sitting in last place in NL, has lost five in a row and eight of the last 10. It has lost nine to the Phillies since last season, its longest streak against any Eastern Division rival since 2009, when nine straight stumbles were recorded.

Wheeler (6-3) conceded one run in four hits in seven innings, including three. The right-hander improved to 3-0 earlier this month with a 1.42 ERA in three.

The Phillies finished the game in the third innings with a seven-run, two-out drive. Venezuelan second baseman Cesar Hernandez did not control a powerful grounder by Dominican Yarrow Muoz enough.

Schwarber then found a fastball from Patrick Corbin (3-9) and sent the ball into the center-field stand.

For the Phillies, Venezuelan Odibel Herrera 1-0. Dominican Munoz scored two runs at 4-1 and scored an RBI.

For the nationals, Venezuela’s Hernández 3–1, Keibert Ruiz 4–0, Ehire Adriánza 2–0. Dominican Juan Soto 4-0, Nelson Cruz 3-1, Victor Robles 1-1, Machel Franco 3-0.
