Science Says: The Fight Against Cancer Begins in the Kitchen

This disease is the second cause of death in the world.

A balanced diet is the key to maintaining a healthy body. The World Health Organization states that good eating habits help prevent disease.

“A healthy diet helps protect us against all forms of malnutrition as well as non-communicable diseases including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer.”

The American Society of Clinical Oncology notes that “certain foods and the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that make them may increase or decrease the risk of cancer. Researchers are studying how certain foods, nutrients and elements and eating patterns associated with cancer.”

The results of these investigations have shown that consumption of certain foods may help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. The following lists several of these, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology:

  • Foods of plant origin: This type of food contains various healthy nutrients for the human body. Carotenoids (red, yellow and orange colored vegetables), polyphenols (herbs, spices, greens, nuts, apples and other plants) and allium compounds (garlic, leeks).
  • Antioxidants: Help protect the body from oxidants, which damage cells. It contains Vitamin E and Vitamin C.
  • Minerals and other vitamins.
  • Dietary Fiber: Contributes positively to the digestive process, helping food move through quickly and maintaining a healthy microbiome. The latter is related to a lower risk of cancer. Some high fiber foods include: Whole grains and seeds including barley, oats, kamut, einkorn, bulgur, corn, psyllium, rye, legumes, lentils, whole grain pasta, vegetables, etc.

Great care must be taken with the amount of red and processed meat included in the daily diet, as any processed meat carries a cancer risk.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world. This disease develops when there is a change in the DNA of the cells.

“The DNA in a cell is contained within a large number of genes, each of which contains a set of instructions that tell the cell what functions to perform, and how to grow and divide. Errors in the instructions prevent the cell from doing its normal can cause cancer cells to stop functioning and become cancer cells, details the Mayo Clinic, a nonprofit devoted to clinical practice, education and research.
The US National Institutes of Health explain that it is not possible to know why a person gets cancer. However, there are some risk factors for the disease, such as exposure to chemicals and other substances and certain habits.

  • Liquor

  • infectious germs
  • hormones
  • chronic inflammation
  • immunosuppression
  • the sunlight
  • obesity
  • radiation
  • substances in the environment that cause cancer
  • Tobacco

The Mayo Clinic explains that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. The main risk factor for suffering from it is smoking cigarette or tobacco.
Some of the risk factors mentioned above are avoidable and preventable, as are certain behaviors such as tobacco smoking or drinking. However, avoiding these does not mean that cancer can be avoided, rather it means that the risk is reduced.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers some recommendations that may help reduce risk factors:

  • Don’t smoke and stay away from people who smoke.
  • moderate alcohol consumption.
  • Avoid excessive exposure of the skin to the sun. Avoid using tanning chambers.
  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
  • Keep a healthy weight. For this, it is necessary to take a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
