Scott Bakula greets his co-star Dean Stockwell from The Quantum Leap

TV star Scott Bakula fondly remembered his Quantum Leap co-star Dean Stockwell on Tuesday, as news of the admiral’s death swept across space-time on screen.

Oscar-nominated Stockwell, who passed away on Sunday at age 85, became a television veteran, appearing in and out of Hollywood from childhood, and became a good friend of Bakula during their rewarding careers.

In a statement to The Times on Tuesday, Bakula paid tribute to Stockwell, whom he met at his 1988 Quantum Leap audition. The cast starred on NBC’s time travel series and became science fiction icons on the small screen while the series ran from 1989 to 1993.

“He agreed to“ read ”for the Web, I have already been chosen,” Bakula said about their first meeting. “We immediately connected, and my career and my life changed that day in [former NBC president] Brandon Tarticoff’s office. How lucky are we to have it? He’ll be nominated for an Academy Award in Married to the Mafia in a few months, but he’s stuck with us. Intuition? All I know is that he never tried to quit or complain, he loved the role and the show and everything else was history. “

Stockwell played Admiral Al Kalavicci, a wise character who appeared to Bakula physicist Dr. Sam Beckett in a hologram. In Instagram Stories, Bakula described him as “a favorite scene stealing hologram.”

“He became a close friend and mentor of mine, and over the next five very stressful years, we became very close. Dean was such a passionate person … about life, his work, his art (he was an amazing artist!), His family, all kinds of things, people, music, the planet, cigars, golf and so on! Bakula wrote.

As a child, Stockwell starred in the films Anchors Tremble, The Gentlemen’s Agreement, Blue Velvet and The Secret Garden. Because of this, Bakula said, the former child star had a “soft spot for every young actor” who came to the set of Quantum Leap.

“He was very protective of their rights and safety and always checked them to make sure they were okay. His sincere response to the children made all of us pay attention to this and become the best guardians ourselves, ”Bakula continued.

The men later reunited on the small screen for the 2014 episode NCIS: New Orleans, a CBS procedural commercial that Bakula filmed until last May, when it ended after seven seasons.

“Despite the fact that his career came and went several times during his seventy-odd years in business, he was always grateful and glad to have the opportunity to continue working,” Bakula wrote. “He only complained when we called him to the golf course and said we were ready for him to come to work! He used to announce his presence on the soundstage (if we haven’t caught the smell of cigar smoke trailing behind him yet) with a roar, “The fun starts now!” More correct words have never been spoken.

“I loved him very much and it was an honor to get to know him. He made me a better person … ”- he concluded.

Lydia Cornell, who worked with Stockwell on the Quantum Leap Pilot Project, tweeted that he “always had a mischievous twinkle of humor in his eyes,” and his Battlestar Galactica co-star Edward James Olmos also recalled years of working together.

“The true giant of man is gone,” said Olmos. tweeted… “I was lucky to work with him on Miami Vice and Battlestar. I will cherish the years we spent together. He was a gift to everyone who really knew him. “
