Mashing Junas Donskoy’s $3.9 million cap during the 2022-23 season will help the Avalanche re-sign captain Gabe Landeskog, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 28.
Expansion Seattle Kraken is apparently doing just that.
The period in which Kraken had exclusive interviews and negotiation rights with all unsecured free agents ended Wednesday morning, and Kraken is set to select Donskoy in the evening’s draft.
A selection from AVS to Seattle was scheduled to take place at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Draft starts at 6 PM MT.

The Seattle center could also pick JT Compher, who is earning $3.5 million by 2022–23, or defenseman Eric Johnson, who is worth $6 million during the same year, among others. The more expensive the Kraken, the better chance AVS can keep Landeskog in Denver.
In addition to Landeskog, the Avalanche should still sign banned free agent defenseman Kale Makar, RFA Tyson Jost, and try to sign goalkeeper Philippe Grubauer. The AVS also needs to round out their roster with complimentary players from trades and free agency.
