Like every year, around this time, the veins come back to the surface. Why? Because from today a new edition of the PAU (Proves d’Accés a la Universitat) begins in Catalonia, which has been known as Selectivity for Life, and which will last until Thursday. Students not only prepare to pass the exam but also aspire to get the highest grades. And that is, depending on the degree to which you want to reach, you need an access note that is available to a small number of people.
If only degrees are analyzed (except for double degrees), in general, Medicine is the one that requires the highest accessibility in Spain. According to statistics from Science, Innovation and Universities, eight of the ten highest grades required for the 2021-2022 academic year correspond to this degree.
The degree that required higher scores last year was Basic and Experimental Biomedicine from the University of Seville (13.62), although it only offered 50 places, which raises the grade; But medicine degrees fell from second to sixth in the top 10 – the Complutense University of Madrid (13.50), the Autonomous University of Madrid (13.463), the University of Valencia (13.43), the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (13.4) and the University of Jaime I Castellón. (13.38, although it only offered 80 places) – and from 8th to 10th.
In Catalonia, the degree with the highest admission mark was Mathematics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya with 13,114. The podium was completed by Medicine at the University of Barcelona (UB) with 13,022, and the University of Pompeau Fabra (UPF) for International Economics and Business Studies with 12,956.
Double degrees usually require a higher access grade than traditional degrees. The explanation lies in the small number of places offered. In this sense, the double degree in physics and mathematics is the one that typically ranks the most in the top 10 of double degrees with the most prohibitive entry requirements, taking seven out of ten places in this ranking last year.
For example, Madrid’s Complutense University asked for 13.85 in 2021, which is the degree with the highest grade in the whole of Spain (counting degrees and double degrees). Of course, offering very few seats. The University of Granada, for example, is third in this classification, offering 21. The University of Zaragoza, Salamanca and Santiago de Compostela, meanwhile, only 10.
In Catalonia it was also the dual degree (physics and mathematics) that requested the highest score, 13,346 from UB (10 places offered), followed by UB, Mathematics and Computer Engineering (12,899 / 20 places) and second from Applied . Languages and translation and interpretation of the UPF (12,438).
As a general rule, as the rankings usually show, medicine degrees are most sought after by university students. However, business administration and management are most needed by companies. In 2020, 11.3% of job offers aimed at university graduates were in line with this degree, according to the 2021 Adeco Infoplo report.
Due to the Kovid health crisis, careers related to the health sector increased their weight the most in job offers. Notably, nursing, which was ranked seventh in the rankings in 2019, was the second university degree in demand by companies in 2020, from 2.5% in 2019 to 6.9% a year later.
