Selena Gomez reveals how her mental health diagnosis changed her life

Selena Gomez has opened up about how a mental health diagnosis changed her life in a new interview with “Good Morning America.”

The singer, who shared in April 2020 that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, told “GMA” on Monday that it was “really free to get information.”

“It made me really happy as I started having a relationship with myself, and I think that’s the best part,” Gomez said. She said she was “the happiest I’ve ever been.”

The “Only Murder in the Building” star first publicly revealed her diagnosis during an appearance on Miley Cyrus’ Instagram Live talk show, “Bright Minded” at the start of the pandemic.

The actor told Cyrus at the time, “After going through a lot of different things, I realized I was bipolar and so when I go to find out more details, it really helps me.” “Once I know it it doesn’t scare me. I guess people are afraid of it, right?”

In the same chat, Gomez said that her desire to seek professional medical help reminded her of how her mother helped her overcome a major fear when she was younger.

“When I finally said what I was about to say, I wanted to know everything about it and that took the fear away,” Gomez said. “When I was little, I was afraid of thunderstorms, and my mom bought me all these different books about thunder, [saying], ‘The more you educate yourself on this, the more you are not going to be afraid.’ And it worked perfectly. ,

And while learning more about her diagnosis has helped improve the singer’s emotional well-being, one major lifestyle change has also made a difference: living offline.

“I haven’t been on the Internet in 4 1/2 years,” Gomez said on “Good Morning America.” “It’s completely changed my life. I’m happier, I’m more present, I connect with people more. It makes me feel normal.”
