Senate debates Democrats’ economic plan

WASHINGTON ( Associated Press) — Democrats were trying to pass their economic package in the Senate on Sunday, debating a less ambitious measure than President Joe Biden’s, but a move to curb global warming, reduce drug costs, and more. and touching upon the party’s deep-seated dreams of taxing huge corporations.

The debate began on Saturday; By early Sunday, Democrats had crushed more than a dozen Republican amendments designed to create torpedo laws or campaign ads attacking Democratic senators. Despite unanimous opposition from the GOP, a 50–50 Democratic unity in the chamber, supported by a tie-breaking vote by Vice President Kamala Harris, suggested the party was on track for a morale-boosting victory three months before the midterm election and where Congress was elected. Control was at stake.

“I think it’s going to happen,” Biden told reporters as he headed for Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, early Sunday to end his COVID-19 isolation from the White House. The House of Representatives was on track to give final approval from Congress on Friday when he briefly returned from his summer vacation.

Republicans say the move will undermine the economy that politicians are struggling to keep from slipping into recession. He said the bill’s trade tax would hurt job creation and push prices even higher, making it harder for people to cope with the country’s worst inflation since the 1980s.

Independent analysts believe that the Democrats’ “Inflation Reduction Act” will have little effect on the rise in consumer prices. The bill is a little more than a tenth the size of Biden’s initial 10-year, $3.5 billion progressive plan and omits his proposals for universal preschool, paid family leave and expanded childcare assistance.
