Senator from Indiana instructs teacher not to condemn Nazism in front of students

The right-wing Indiana senator backtracked on his shocking instructions given to a history teacher during parliamentary hearings this week not to criticize Nazism or fascism in front of his students.

During Wednesday’s hearing, teacher Matt Bockenfeld noted that his class was “learning about the rise of fascism and the rise of Nazism right now,” adding, “I’m just not neutral about the political ideology of fascism. We condemn him and we condemn him completely. “

The goal, he said, is to help students “recognize this and fight it. This is why we are learning to use history to make the world a better place. “

Republican Senator Scott Baldwin replied, “We must be impartial.” He also said he would not “discredit” Nazism.

However, after a violent reaction, Baldwin changed his comments for the Indy Star on Thursday.

“Nazism, Marxism and fascism are a stain on our world history, and they should be considered as such, and I could not adequately articulate this in my comments,” he said.

Baldwin delivered his groundbreaking instruction at a legislative hearing on State Senate Bill 167, which will require schools to form committees, including parents, to review all curricula. It will also prohibit schools from teaching various concepts related to gender, race, ethnicity, religion, skin color, and national origin as part of an attack on critical racial theory.

The trend is similar to what happened in Texas, where the state legislature last year canceled a requirement for students to be taught that the white supremacist campaign with attacks and assassinations of the Ku Klux Klan was “morally wrong.”

He added after publishing Baldwin’s remarks: “My worst fears have been confirmed.”
