Senator Patrick Leahy not running for re-election

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy said Monday that he would not run for a ninth term in 2022, the last major Democratic resignation ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

“I have come to the conclusion that it is time to put down the hammer. It’s time to pass the torch on to the next Vermont … time to get home, ”Leahy said at a press conference in Montpellier after talking about his legislative accomplishments in his 47 years in office.

74-year-old Democratic Party member Peter Welch, the only state representative in Congress, is considered a possible candidate for Leahy’s seat, as are Vermont Senate President Pro Tem Becca Balint (D) and State Senator Kesha Ram-Hinsdale (D). Vermont is the only state that has never sent a woman to Congress.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott, a moderate Republican, said he would not run. National Republicans are expected to lobby Scott and change their minds.

Leahy was briefly hospitalized earlier this year after he began to “feel unwell” in his Capitol office. He was sent to hospital for testing just hours after he was sworn in to preside over the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump.

Health concerns have raised concerns among his fellow Democrats. Democrats currently control the House with a narrow 50-50 majority, with Harris voting as needed. They will need all 50 Democrats to pass President Joe Biden’s Social Spending and Climate Package, the Recovery Efficiency Act, and fill a Supreme Court vacancy if any.

Aside from his long career in government, Leahy is the only member of Congress to appear in multiple Batman films – in fact, five.
