The trailer of Taapsee Pannu’s much-awaited Shabaash Mithu is out, and it looks promising with its gripping storyline. It narrates the struggles and successes of recently retired cricketer Mithali Raj. Taapsee plays the role of Mithali, who has a tan, powerful batting skills and determination written extensively on her forehead. Directed by Srijit Mukherji, the film sees Taapsee replacing Mithali as a cricketer who redefined the game not only in India, but globally as well. The two-minute and 44-second long trailer begins with Taapsee hitting the ground hitting fours and sixes one after the other. This soon plays into the childhood of Mithali, a Tamilian who is caught on the wrong foot as she catches her older brother’s ball. As her talent is noticed by her elders, and she begins her training, she is seen as an ‘English medium’ girl by her fellow trainees. How she rises above all conflicts and even raises her voice to have her names written on team jerseys instead of male cricketers is tough.
Praising Mithali, Taapsee had earlier said, “There are cricketers who have records. There are cricketers who have tremendous fan following. There are cricketers who inspire you and make you believe that if they can do it, then there are cricketers. You can! And then there’s Mithali. She did it all in her classic graceful style and changed the game of cricket where women’s presence is concerned.”
She said, “She will be remembered for her contribution to women’s cricket, not only in our country but across the world. I have been very fortunate as a fan who got to live on camera the wonderful journey of her 23 years. Taught me. So much about resilience and perseverance. He truly is a legend we can never thank enough.” Shabaash Mithu will hit the theaters on July 15.
