Chennai: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday called for people to vote for a “double engine government” in the state, terming the DMK-Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu as “corrupt and dynastic”.
Shah said at a rally in Chennai, “The development of the state is possible only when we defeat the dynastic and corrupt DMK-Congress.” Only the development journey started under the leadership of PM Modi can make Tamil Nadu the dream of MGR and Jayalalithaa. The Chief Minister and Deputy CM did a good job. I appeal to the people to form a double engine government in Tamil Nadu. ”
MG Ramachandran (called ‘MGR’) was the founder of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which currently held the government. After him, the party was led by former Chief Minister J.J. Jayalalithaa took over and also became the Chief Minister of the state. The current CM Edappadi K Palaniswamy and deputy CM O Panneerselvam both belong to the AIADMK.
Shah did a roadshow for BJP’s candidate Khushboo Sundar for the April 6 assembly elections. The senior BJP leader along with Sundar greeted supporters and other AIADMK candidates in nearby constituencies with an open van.
Slogans of Bharat Mata ki Jai echoed in the constituency during Shah’s rally, in which the BJP-AIADMK alliance flags were waved. The roadshow is the final phase of the campaign, which will end tomorrow, as voting takes place on 6 April.
The BJP has fielded actor-turned-politician Sundar, where he is pitted against N Ezhilan of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Elections to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly with 234 seats are scheduled on 6 April. Votes will be counted on 2 May.
