When it comes to female representation on screen, a lot has changed. But Aditi Pohankar feels that there is still some taboo about female sexuality. The actress, who plays the lead in the web series, says she is happy to be a part of a project that doesn’t hold back.
“The show has always been more about a woman expressing or feeling her power than a sexual awakening. I guess, when you’re not afraid to be a woman, [when] true empowerment [takes place], Until now, we have suppressed our sexuality, our being as women. Everything is pretty cool when it comes to female sexuality. However, this is not the case for men,” says Pohankar.
Elaborating on how the portrayal differs when it comes to the male character, the 27-year-old further added, “Men are very open about everything. For example, if you watch a typical honeymoon scene, a man is pushed inside a room where his bride is sitting and waiting for him. Why can’t it be the other way around?”
Actor, who was also seen in the web series Aashram And Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010), believe that this may be a consequence of the normalization of sexism in outside society.
“I won’t argue the whole man and woman thing. But, women are always considered as receivers (in this scenario). But we don’t need to show it every time. If chapati becomes round then mommy must have made, Teddy hai to man ne. Mere papa makes round chapatis. Such things separate many things,” says the actor, adding, “Women are receivers and givers but in emotion, understanding, life and love.
As a result, Pohankar is not only proud to be a part of a web show that touches on the topic of female sexuality, but is also happy that the makers did it without giving a crap.
“what I love [about working on She] It is that it has been two seasons so far, and no one has ever asked me why I did this scene like this or how did I do this scene like this. The audience is not following the mind of a human being, not male or female,” she says.
